10. Safety Measures

The activities and precautions which must be taken to improve safety and to reduce the risks to the detector, its equipement, and the employees’ well-being are discussed in this chapter.

10.1. DO

  1. Always follow the general laboratory safety rules.
  2. Follow the instructions given in this manual carefully.
  3. Consult with the SQS beamline scientists and members of the detector groups (Kiana Setoodehnia and David Lomidze) if you need information on the operation of pnCCD and other parts of the SQS beamline.
  4. Call DOC in case of doubt.
  5. Be careful when working with the cables, in particular the Fiber Optic cable used for DAQ. It can easily get damaged.
  6. Be careful with cable connections. Make sure the correct cable is properly plugged into the correct input. Troubleshooting may be hard and time consuming if something is wrong with the cable connections. In particular, make sure the trigger cables (see SequencerCableConnection) are set up properly.
  7. Be careful while connecting the MPOD crate’s cables to the pnCCD detector. Make sure all connections are properly performed and the screws are tightened but not too tight to strip the screw.

10.2. DON’T

  1. Do not leave the pnCCD detector biased and unattended. If you have to leave the detector biased, make sure it is in Save operation mode (see ModeChange) and even then, do not leave the detector unattended more than 12 hours. Turn it OFF (see PowerOff) if no one is around for more than 12 hours.
  2. If you are not an SQS beamline scientist, do not operate the vacuum system and/or the pnCCD motion system unsupervised.
  3. Ensure the FEL beam does not touch the pnCCD sensors. If it does, you may have damaged the sensors, and the detector may require annealing (see annealing).
  4. Do not work with the electronics if you do not have an XFEL Elektrisch unterwiesene Person (EuP) Training.

10.3. Important Reminders

  1. Turn OFF the lights in the hutch and the pnCCD encoders (see KaraboMotion) before you bias the pnCCD.
  2. Do not forget to turn OFF the \(P_{CCD, low}\) and Stage3 gauges (see KaraboDevicesVacuum) before you bias the pnCCD.
  3. Do not forget to change the pnCCD gain setting in the SQS_NQS_PNCCD1MP/MDL/DAQ_GAIN Karabo device before you start a run (see GainSaving).
  4. Do not forget to change the properties (pnCCD gain setting, temperature and bias voltage) of the calibration manager in the SQS_NQS_PNCCD1MP/CAL/MANAGER Karabo device prior to retrieving new dark constants from the calibration database using the online calibration pipeline (see CalibratedPreview).
  5. Do not forget to migrate runs to the Maxwell cluster.
  6. The pnCCD elog also has a lot of useful details, tips, pictures and valuable and updated information regarding the hardware, operation and data analysis of pnCCD. Please consider consluting the elog together with this manual.
